HOW YOU WILL DO IT

As an Engineering Business Development Director, you will meet the profitable engineering services revenue objectives for the Sector. Be the principal owner and driver of the engineering services strategy in the Sector. Be accountable for the balanced assignment of Customers and Targets to Sector engineering services business development staff. Working in a "One Plexus" manner with the appropriate Plexus leadership associated with critical accounts, you will assume the leadership role in the development of account relationships that will lead to engineering services business opportunities. You will also work closely with the Market Sector VP and Senior Director of Engineering Solutions to:

1. Establish and be accountable for the fiscal year engineering services revenue objective for the Sector.

2. Ensure Account Plan strategies as they pertain to engineering services exist for all key Customers and Targets.

3. Create, revise, and refresh the overall Sector strategy.

Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Effectively manages, develops, and deploys sector MES team to meet the overall objectives for engineering services.
  • Establishes and manages sector account based Identified revenue in order to meet annual plan.
  • Drives coordination with site and functional leadership to ensure consistent and effective implementation of sector engineering services strategy.
  • Contributes to development of best practices and processes to continuously improve effectiveness of engineering services business development.
  • In conjunction with sector leadership, creates and communicates engineering services business development strategy.
  • Accountable to execute on Plexus' Best People strategy, leaders will focus on evaluating potential, driving succession planning and ensuring that their employees receive the development and coaching required to realize their full potential.

Additional Accountabilities:

  • Fosters and actively cultivates a Lean Sigma culture through promotion of the Lean philosophy, support of and direct participation in Lean Sigma activities (including RIEs and Report-outs), and application of the tools (including but not limited to A3, DMAIC, Value Stream Mapping, 5S, etc.).
  • Be accountable for developing, executing, and communicating the Sector strategy. Includes specifically communicating the "state" of the Sector on a regular (minimum monthly) basis to engineering services site leadership.
  • Be able to represent to Plexus executive management on an ongoing basis progress to goal (and any required changes to strategic plans) for all accounts within the Sector.
  • Be accountable for maintaining and driving the integrity of the Sector-based engineering services revenue Forecaster.
  • Work closely with peer Directors, Engineering Solutions in other Sectors to establish, share, and leverage best practices with regard to engineering services business development.
  • In concert with assigned engineering services site personnel and Sector legal personnel, understand and be able to lead engineering services terms and conditions negotiations.
  • Hire, develop and manage the engineering services business development staff in the assigned Sector.
  • For critical Customers in the Sector, drive engineering sales objectives by building/maintaining peer customer relationships, executing Account Plans, and contributing to opportunity project scope definition.
  • In concert with Plexus leadership, contribute to the development of Account Plans with regard to engineering services content.
  • In cooperation with the Director, Manufacturing Solutions and MSVP, contribute to the overall targeting strategy for the Sector. Includes evaluation of inbound accounts for "fit" with the Sector strategy.
  • In concert with the Senior Director, Engineering Solutions, assign engineering services sites to near term Customers per the defined Triage Process and determine and execute a transition plan (if required) for the primary customer development responsibility (Sector versus site).
  • Work closely with the MSVP and Senior Director, Engineering Solutions to ensure account-level fiscal year revenue objectives for engineering services are set and lead the Sector team in meeting those objectives.
  • Contribute to Sector marketing initiatives and activities to continuously improve the Sector's positioning and messaging.
  • Drive the pricing strategy required to consistently win profitable engineering services business in the Sector.
  • Be knowledgeable of Sector dynamics with regard to end market OEMs, trends, regulatory environment, and core technology needs. Be able to credibly engage OEMs in discussions concerning end market place needs, issues, and challenges.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Sector's engineering services Project Experience database and ensure timely contribution of Project Experience slides for assigned Customers occurs.
  • Maintain technical competency regarding Plexus engineering services capabilities in all disciplines. Be able to represent these capabilities to Customers and Targets.
  • Maintain expertise in all aspects of the engineering services process, including project management, representative development cycles, and high level project estimation (schedules, resources and budgets). Be an active senior level reviewer of Proposals.
  • Frequent travel may be required to meet the needs of the business (estimated 35%).
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field is required; a Master's degree in Business Administration is preferred.
  • Two (2) years of related experience is required.
  • Experience of Nine (9) year(s) in an engineering services/product development environment is required for this position, including Four (4) years of project and functional management and Two (2) years of business development experience. Assuming education requirements are met, equivalent industry experience of Ten (10) or more years is highly desirable.
  • Suggested minimum of Three (3) years specific industry experience in a product development environment.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key job accountabilities may be considered.


Other Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and to take the initiative to identify sales opportunities in a services business
  • Understanding of product development methodologies for a wide range of engineering disciplines
  • Understanding of marketing fundamentals specific to services, positioning of services, and Plexus' engineering services competitive environment
  • Possess a good understanding of sales principles and negotiating skills
  • Possess strong team building skills
